The Start of Self Improvement
Whether we like it or not, we all have to grow. With every new season comes a new version of ourselves. We want to hope that every new version of ourselves is better than the last. This is why self improvement is so important. No one is perfect. We can’t expect other people to fix our flaws. We have to do that within ourselves. I’ve been working this past year on working on myself and changing my flaws one step at a time. We can’t change in one day… but we can take some pretty deep strides. One of the things I’m most passionate about is making people see their worth. It doesn’t matter the state that you are in right now. Every day is a new day. My senior year of high school was when I realized I wanted to study psychology. I’ve also been working on being grateful for the things I have and learning how to do the right things for my mind and body.
I was hoping to maybe one day finally be perfect and happy with who I was as a person… but I soon realized that that isn’t how it works. We will always want more. It’s human nature. Your journey to self improvement will never be over because there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that after I learn one thing… there is something else to learn. This universe is endless. After one TedTalk is watched… another is uploaded. So there is always more to learn, do, say, and be. There will always be something left to improve on. Whether that be with your mind, your weight, your speech, or something as simple as your handwriting. In the end, whenever we think we are good, we can always be better. This is the start of our journey to find small ways we can improve ourselves everyday. Each new blog post will reveal a new way you can better your mind and body, as well as give you the reasons behind why doing this action will benefit you. So… why is self improvement so important anyway?
Why It’s Important and How to Start
While we go to school, we are continuously told to do better. Enter harder classes. Make better grades. Be the best of the best. We don’t get the same kind of support for bettering our lifestyles though.
We usually look past self improvement. Any time we make a mistake, we brush it off. We pretend like it didn’t happen. We try to forget about it. However, we fail to notice that this doesn’t fix anything. When we make an F on a test, the grade doesn’t disappear when we throw it in the trash. It eventually adds up into our overall grade and we feel it in the end. We should see our mistakes and flaws in the same way. If we don’t fix them, they just sit there and come back up later when we need them the least.
The first step to self improvement is opening your eyes. Being aware that you are far from perfect, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. It should never stop because we are never ever going to be perfect.
You should first increase your self awareness. Learn more about who you are as a person. Sit down and write down your beliefs and the qualities that make you… you. Think about your story. How have you become who you are today? What was your lowest low and your highest high? Did these things affect your life in any way? Take a look at all of your memories. Remember all of those who have come and gone in your life and see how their presence and absence affected your life as it is today. As life goes on, try and remember to be self aware. With each new experience, try and figure out what lesson it taught you.
You should also Be aware of your strengths. For example, I know that my biggest strength is leadership. I found this out my freshman year of high school. As time went on, I found new ways to enhance that strength.. I went to leadership programs to learn how I could better use my leadership skills. This helped me better set my life goals. When I learned that I was a leader, it was easier for me to choose a career field that best fit my skills.
Be able to overcome your weaknesses. It is important to also know the things you are not good at. My worst habit is procrastination. I always say “I’ll do it later”. The best way to overcome our weaknesses is to look past them. See that big end goal sign. Do everything you can to make it there. You will of course stumble and fall on your way there, but the point is that you keep going, no matter what is trying to stop you.
Be able to step out of your comfort zone. When I was in 10th grade, I did what, at the time, was the craziest thing. I went on a trip where I knew no one. I stepped into a whole new place without having a single friend. It was WAY out of my comfort zone. However, in the end it made me a better leader and I am now able to go out on my own comfortably. If I had never taken the chance to go to that camp, I’d have never gained that skill.
At the end of the day, you know the parts of yourself that you need to improve. We can start making small steps towards a better you every day. More posts will come in the future about the ways you can start your path to self improvement today!
